Systems Change from the Inside Out: A New Program

Back in 2019, Hildy started a research inquiry about the systems that support social change efforts. From her initial blog about this topic

Do you ever feel like Sisyphus in your work to create a more humane world – like you’re taking two steps forward and 1.9 steps back? Does it feel sometimes like the struggle to raise money, to stay competitive, to do more with less… is just as hard, if not harder, than the “real” work of your mission?

It’s been two years since Hildy began that research inquiry, talking with social activists and traditional organizational leaders, with academics and foundation leaders – pretty much anyone who cares about creating a more humane, equitable world. She has documented her findings and analyses at this blog post, and especially at the slide deck linked from that post.

As we have sought to accomplish our own mission here at Creating the Future, we have continually encountered systems that seem to actively thwart social change – from the obvious ones like boards and funding, to the more subtle forces of accounting and human resources.

As a result, this fall we will be launching a new program. In the following short video, Hildy explains what she learned, and explains what we will be stepping into next, to align the internal, non-mission work done inside social change efforts every day, with the equitable, humane, healthy world we want to see.

We are excited about the potential of this new effort to create significant change, not just in social change efforts, but in workplace systems everywhere.

If you would like to follow along, to learn alongside us and develop more effective, equitable systems for social change and beyond, subscribe to our eJournal, where we will be keeping folks posted.
