Digging deep, as deep as we can go.
This month, the board of Creating the Future will be tilling the soil of two topics that are inspiring as much as they are challenging. We’ll be considering what we will do to create a workplace that brings out the best in everyone, whether paid or unpaid.
As is so common when boards consider subjects related to personnel, it can be easy to start with questions such as, “what’s our budget, and what can we offer our employees, given our finances?” With that in mind, we intend that our board conversation will encompass more than that. If we are intentional about the kind of workplace we want to create, then what does it look like to create workplace conditions that bring out the best in people?
From that conversation, we’ll move on to develop a framework for the board to examine and learn about the monthly achievements of the organization, as we strive towards our mission. A framework that takes us beyond hearing about what has already happened, and into defining indicators that will clarify how we’re doing on the criteria that make the most difference to the community we serve.
Some of the indicators we might want to consider include:
- In the past month, what revenues came in, and where did they come from?
- What resources did we nurture, how did we nurture them, how do we know we were successful at it?
- Are we doing better at nurturing resources, what are they, what might they be, how do we know we’re doing better at it?
- What are we accomplishing in our mission area, and how do we know?
- If we created a monthly dashboard, what three indicators would the board want to examine? What information would be most illustrative in a three-minute video by our chief mission officer?
- How inspired are our staff as they go to work each day? How inspired are our board members as they attend board meetings each month?
