Our gift to you this holiday season is nothing less than inspiration. It is also a sneak preview of our Social Change Bookstore, one of the many new programs coming to Creating the Future in 2020.
All three of these books make clear that we absolutely can create a future different from our past. In these turbulent times, that feels like the best gift we could share.
All That We Share: A Field Guide to the Commons
In our minds, the almost unspoken subtitle to Jay Walljasper’s easy-to-read book says it all: How to save the economy, the environment, the internet, democracy, our communities, and everything else that belongs to all of us. If you love the concept of Collective Enoughness, this book will have you scribbling all over the margins, and excited to take action – together.
Reframing Nonprofit Organizations: Democracy, Inclusion, and Social Change
These days, lots of attention is being paid to critiques of philanthropy and foundations. In this treasure trove of a book, editors Angela Eikenberry, Roseanne Mirabella, and Billie Sandberg have realized that it’s not just about the money; it’s about how social change organizations do EVERYTHING. From volunteering to collaboration, from human resources to the history of the whole sector, this book takes a critical look at all the systems that are intended to support social change groups. Well researched and filled with insights, we cannot recommend this book enough.
Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals
Originally published in 1971, Saul Alinsky’s small book is far more pragmatic than radical. If your work is about improving the quality of life in communities, Rules for Radicals is a lesson in ethics, connection, and humility. Alinsky provides timeless, practical wisdom for changing the world. 100% applicable to the work of today.
If you use the links here, a small portion of the sales price will help support Creating the Future’s programs. Or ask your local, independent bookstore to order them for you.
As 2019 winds to a close, we wish you all the possibilities that life holds.
