Catalytic Thinking Exercise:
Remember to Celebrate

Are you watching the delightful documentary series, Welcome to Wrexham? The series documents the trials and triumphs of a football (soccer) team in Wales. One of the things we love about the series is the theme song, with lyrics about the struggles of the team and the town itself.

It’s the last line of that song that gets us every time:

Don’t forget to sing when you win.

That line hits to the heart of changemakers everywhere. We complete a huge effort, perhaps one that took a year to come to fruition, maybe even longer. We’ve worked our buns off, and it was a huge success.

And the moment it’s done, we turn to the huge pile on our desks, immediately lamenting all that has NOT gotten done. And then we dive into whatever task is next.

An organization focused on aging held its first gala. The evening's main event was a performance by Steve Allen, a pioneer in radio and TV entertainment. Mr. Allen exemplified the organization's mission, honoring and supporting active aging.

The event was sold out, a huge success. And yet instead of celebrating, the organization's development officer was found in the women's room, panicking. Her only thought: How will we ever top this next year?!

Celebrating our wins is especially important during these troubling times, when those wins may be small against seemingly overwhelming odds. As those small wins add up, are we taking time to sing to celebrate?

This week’s exercise is therefore a simple one. And yet it may be one of the most powerful things you can do.

Try this
Create a Celebrate List.

A Celebrate List is a direct result of the Catalytic Thinking question, “What would good look like?” After you’ve created that good result, before moving on to the next thing on the list – this is about taking a moment to SING!

Maintaining a Celebrate List is a simple way to gain perspective when life is keeping you in the weeds. All it takes is sitting down with your team every month or so, and taking a few moments to celebrate what you have accomplished.

To jog your memory, go through your calendar. Go through your emails, your list of recorded Zoom meetings. Go through old to-do lists.

And list it all, large and small. What have you accomplished this year so far, this month so far, this week so far?

You can list it in a shared document. We prefer to list our achievements in bright colors on a flip chart sheet that we post where everyone can see it. Over time, we’ve posted it in the conference room, in the work room, in the lunch room. After all, the point is to celebrate!

That list will help you when you are writing your annual report and when you're talking with community members about your work. More important, though - the very act of creating that list will be a reality check. As your to-do list continues to grow, so does your WE DID IT list! Sometimes just seeing all that you have accomplished is a huge pat-on-the-back. And we all need that acknowledgement, especially from ourselves.

Celebrating is such an important part of what it takes to create what is possible. It’s why we include it as a key part of the Catalytic Thinking framework.

So aim for what is possible. Do the work. And when it’s done, remember to celebrate. Find a way to sing when you win.
