How can we trust each other if we don’t know each other?
Reminder: Monday, June 12th
Creating the Future’s board and community (that’s you!) will meet to discuss and adopt our Statement of our Values in Action. And we want you to join that discussion! Learn more here…

Also, if you haven’t already told us what YOU think we value, based on what you’ve seen of Creating the Future, please do so. As we create a statement of our values in action, we want to be sure we are walking that talk. Share your thoughts here…

Building Strong Work Teams (Part 5): Getting to Know Each Other
This is the 5th in a series of practices rooted in Catalytic Listening, focused on building supportive, effective, and joyful work teams. Read the blog that kicked off this series here.

Practice #1 focused on how to begin meetings to bring out the best in people.
Practice #2 focused on how to end meetings, to bring out the best in people.
Practice #3 turned reflection into weekly celebration.
Practice #4 focused on prioritizing the time it takes to build trust.

This week, in Practice #5, we’re diving into some bigger, more intentional practices – sharing our stories as whole people.

Knowing Each Other’s Stories
In our eJournal two weeks ago, we talked about the importance of prioritizing time to get to know each other. And we shared stories of teams who have turned their work around by the simple act of sharing their stories.

This week’s practice is about taking that step.

Try this:

Looking back on our lives, most of us don’t see a straight line. Instead, we see twists and bends and unexpected side roads. These are the parts of the journey that make us who we are today!

Inviting your team members to share their story allows you to get to know the person behind the 30 second elevator pitch.

You can set aside a whole staff meeting for these stories, or make this an item at every staff meeting until everyone has told their story. Either way, allow ample time for those stories to unfold, while keeping things manageable - perhaps 10 minutes apiece.

Here are some questions you can try:

  • What is the winding path of your life that has led you to be doing the work you are doing with our team?
  • What are the twists and turns in your journey that have made the biggest impact on who you are and what you care about? How does that relate to the work we’re doing as a team?
  • Who are the people who have had the biggest influence on who you are? What has that influence led you to do that you might otherwise not have done? How does that connect to the work you’re doing with our team?
  • What parts of your life led you to care about the things you care most about in your life? What impact does that have on our work as a team?
As you invite people to share their story, be sure to give them permission to share only the level of detail they feel comfortable sharing. Creating trusting spaces means meeting people where they are. Your job is simply to open the door. It will be up to your teammates to decide how far into that doorway they feel comfortable stepping.
Whether your "team" is a work team or your family holiday table, a board of directors or a brand new community project, understanding the people around you is a big step towards bringing out the best in them. That is why sharing stories as whole people (vs. knowing each other by position) is a critical part of Catalytic Listening and the larger Catalytic Thinking framework of which Catalytic Listening is a part.
Want to learn alongside other people who are trying out these practices? Join us at the Catalytic Thinking in Action community on Facebook - a welcoming place where you can ask questions and learn from people like you who are experimenting with these practices. We look forward to seeing you there!

Creating
the Future
is a collection of people around the world, supporting each other in a grand experiment.

The experiment:
To determine how much better the world could be if the questions we ask in our day to day lives are bringing out the best in each other.

If everyone, everywhere, is bringing out the best in every person they encounter – and if the systems that guide our behaviors are built to bring out the best in all of us - how much closer will we all be to a healthy, humane world that works for all of us?
