Building Strong Work Teams(Part 3): Being Intentional about Celebrating
This is the 3rd in a series of practices rooted in Catalytic Listening, focused on building supportive, effective, and joyful work teams. Read the blog that kicked off this series here.
  • Practice #2 focused on how to END meetings, reflecting on what happened to be sure everyone is on the same page.
This week, in Practice #3, we’ll turn reflection into celebration.

Celebrating!
Most meetings focus on what WILL get done, often lamenting what did NOT get done.

What about celebrating the heroic stuff you ARE getting done?

Celebration is inspiring. It is reassuring. It is joyful. And it is one more way team members can support each other's efforts.

Try this:
At the beginning of your next staff / team meeting, after you’ve checked in with each other / shared what’s awesome, take a few minutes to celebrate.
  • What did we accomplish since our last meeting? What got done?
  • Where are we now that we weren’t the last time we met? What was moved forward?
  • What great stuff happened?
  • What did we learn that was unexpected? What surprised us? What aha’s did we have?
  • Did someone go way beyond what was expected?
  • Did something impossible become possible?
Make a list. Date that list. Keep it on a whiteboard or flip chart sheet, to look at throughout the week. Or keep it in a binder and add to it every week. (Added bonus – it makes reporting a lot easier. No need to comb through calendars to recreate what happened. It’s all there as you celebrate!)

Our brains are wired to focus on what’s wrong. While that brain physiology is great for getting us out of danger, when those reflexes show up in meetings, they prevent us from being our most rational and creative selves.

Taking time to celebrate all that your team members are accomplishing focuses your brain on what is working well. That helps bypass the brain's fear-and-anxiety center, bringing out the best in yourself and those around you. That is why celebration is part of the Catalytic Thinking framework.

Creating
the Future
is a collection of people around the world, supporting each other in a grand experiment.

The experiment:
To determine how much better the world could be if the questions we ask in our day to day lives are bringing out the best in each other.

If everyone, everywhere, is bringing out the best in every person they encounter – and if the systems that guide our behaviors are built to bring out the best in all of us - how much closer will we all be to a healthy, humane world that works for all of us?
