“Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves.” ~ Abraham Lincoln April 6, 1859 Yesterday was the birthday of a great model for humanity, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.
To celebrate the man who paid for his role in ending slavery with his life, we have 3 “birthday gifts” for you.
- An online conversation: Racial Equity: What Will it Take?
- A practice to increase your awareness of what you are noticing about other people

What Are You Noticing about "Those People"? Every
day offers the opportunity to become aware of what you notice about
other people, and the labels you use, without even realizing you’re
using them.
When we label others, what we are really noticing
are the ways in which we believe those individuals are different from
ourselves. The key word there is “believe,” because the assumptions we make about other people are just that – assumptions.
This
week's practice is therefore to notice what you're noticing. What
labels are you using? How often are you labeling without even realizing
you are doing so?
- "a group of white women"
- "looks like a gang member"
- "typical" young woman covered in tattoos
- "fat guy"
- "Latina grandmother type"
- "tall black guy"
- "old lady who can't make up her mind"
The next time you’re in the grocery store, on the subway, at a sporting event, or just walking down your street, just notice what you’re noticing.
- How often do you notice differences?
- What
adjectives do you use as you notice those differences? (Those
adjectives are cues to the subtle judgments you may not even realize
you're making.)
- Do you notice similarities in the same way?
We
humans seem hard-wired to notice what we perceive to be differences
among us. And unfortunately, we tend to ascribe judgments to those
differences (I feel comfortable around A, I feel unsafe around B, I
prefer being with C, I can't fathom D...)
So the first step is noticing. Try it for an hour. What are you telling yourself about the fellow humans you see around you?

Learn about Lincoln, and benefit Creating the Future! If
all you know about Abraham Lincoln is that he freed the slaves or led
the Union army during the U.S. Civil War, you are missing out on one of
the kindest, wisest and funniest men to grace the history of our world.
Doris Kearns Goodwin captured all that and more in her can’t-put-it-down biography, Team of Rivals. And if you use this link to buy the book, a small portion of that sale will go to Creating the Future! Get the book here...
Spoiler alert:
Don’t be surprised if you cry at the end. You will grow to know Lincoln
so well that you will mourn his death as if a great friend had passed.
About the photo:
Per the Library of Congress, the photo at the top of this page is the
last known photograph of President Lincoln alive. It was taken on the
balcony of the White House on March 6, 1865, a month before he was
killed. Lincoln agreed to sit for this photo at his son Tad's request.

Creating
the
Future
is a
collection of
people around
the world,
supporting
each other in
a grand
experiment.
|
|
|
|
The
experiment:
To
determine how
much better
the world
could be if
the questions
we ask in our
day to day
lives are
bringing out
the best in
each other.
If
everyone,
everywhere, is
bringing out
the best in
every person
they encounter
– and if the
systems that
guide our
behaviors are
built to bring
out the best
in all of us -
how much
closer will we
all be to a
healthy,
humane world
that works for
all of us?
