What would it look like in your daily life if you were BEING the future you want to see for our world?

Are you walking your talk? In last week’s eJournal, we talked about listening for the values in others.
Which leads to the question: What about YOUR values? After all, the only person you can control is yourself.
This week’s practice will, therefore, first begin to uncover your own values. From there, you will take the most important step of all: aligning your actions with your values.
Try this: 1) First let’s uncover your true values.
Fill
in these blanks with your top-of-mind thoughts. If it is helpful to
think especially about people you don’t agree with, do so. Otherwise,
just answer whatever comes to mind.
- In order for the world
to be a more humane, fair and equitable place to live, people would
need to behave more _______________. Their behaviors would be more
_____________.
- The most important things people would base their decisions upon would be _________________.
- I wish other people would be more _________________.
Even though the questions are about other people, your answers are actually a list of your own values, the things that are important to you. Your thoughts about what other people should do are all rooted in your values.
2)
Step 2 is therefore about asking yourself, "Am I walking that
talk? Am I doing what I wish others would do? Am I behaving as I wish
they would behave?"
If you were walking the talk of the values you listed in Step 1... - What decisions would you be making?
- What conversations would you be having? With whom?
- What would you be saying about people with whom you disagree politically?
- What would your comments and posts on social media be saying?
In The Pollyanna Principles, Hildy noted that “Being the change we want to see means walking the talk of our values.”
In
these times of anger, suspicion and division, bringing out the best in
ourselves and those around us is more important than ever. It is so
easy to jump to judgment about what others “should” do.
By
stepping back to first listen to yourself, and to then align your own
actions with the things that are important to you, you will be
unlocking your own potential to be the kind, humane, equitable world
you want to see. That is why Catalytic Listening is at the heart of Catalytic Thinking. |

Creating
the
Future
is a
collection of
people around
the world,
supporting
each other in
a grand
experiment.
|
|
|
|
The
experiment:
To
determine how
much better
the world
could be if
the questions
we ask in our
day to day
lives are
bringing out
the best in
each other.
If
everyone,
everywhere, is
bringing out
the best in
every person
they encounter
– and if the
systems that
guide our
behaviors are
built to bring
out the best
in all of us -
how much
closer will we
all be to a
healthy,
humane world
that works for
all of us?
