"What do you really want?
THAT is the most important question for changing our world... and for changing your own life." ~ Hildy Gottlieb

Better than a New Years Resolution: Being the Results You Want to See It’s that time of year again: the time for the commitments we make to ourselves and rarely keep. What would it take to actually keep the resolutions we make?
First we need to understand why most New Years resolutions fail: Resolutions
are typically a reaction to the things we don’t like about our lives.
Lose 30 pounds. Quit smoking. Stop getting angry.
Because those things are unpleasant, taking action feels like a chore. It's no surprise we find 1,000 reasons not to do them!
Instead
of making reactive resolutions about what you DON'T want, this year try
asking about what you DO want – the “why” behind those
resolutions.
|
|
| Why do you want to lose 30 pounds? To be healthy, to feel attractive, to be able to do things I love to do. Then let’s aim at THAT!
Why do you want to stop getting angry? So that I can be more loving to the people who matter to me. So that I can live a more joyful life. Then let’s aim at THAT!
|
|
|
| Unlike
reactive resolutions, the things we really want are motivating. Rooted
in possibility, these goals are also motivating because we don't have
to wait for the results. We can BE the results we want to see, right
here now. We can be kind right now. We can be more healthy right
now. - Today I will be more loving by giving people the benefit of the doubt.
- Today I will be healthier by eating healthy all day long.
- Today I will be kind, especially when I don’t feel like being kind.
- Today I will prepare to do the things I love to do by going for a walk.
To experiment with aiming at what you really want, try asking…- What
do I want my life to be like at the end of 2017? And what is important
about that? (That second question is the key. Bonus points for every
time you ask it again. “And what is important about that answer?”)
- If
your answer has the word “should” in it (I should quit smoking / I
should exercise more), ask yourself, “What would that make possible for
me? For the people I care about?”
- At
work, look at your annual goals. What will achieving those goals make
possible? For whom? Will those goals directly further your
organization’s mission? Where do your own goals align with those
organizational goals?
Of the three questions that can change the world, "What do we really want?" sets the context for everything else. And there is no better way to start the year than that!
What are the other two questions that can change the world? Watch here…

Future
is a
collection of
people around
the world,
supporting
each other in
a grand
experiment.

The
experiment:
To
determine how
much better
the world
could be if
the questions
we ask in our
day to day
lives are
bringing out
the best in
each other.
If
everyone,
everywhere, is
bringing out
the best in
every person
they encounter
– and if the
systems that
guide our
behaviors are
built to bring
out the best
in all of us -
how much
closer will we
all be to a
healthy,
humane world
that works for
all of us?
