Moving
Beyond Our Reactive Selves
In
every
aspect of our lives, we humans are experts at reacting. We react
(respond) to customer demand. We react (solve / fix / prevent)
to problems.
The flip side of reacting is the act of creating.
Imagine
what would be possible if your efforts moved beyond reacting, to
consistently create what is possible?
The
Delaware Journal of Public Health recently teamed up with Creating the
Future to explore that question, focusing on an issue plaguing many
U.S. communities – creating
relationships of trust and connection between local police and people
of color. Read that in-depth
analysis here.
To
experiment with "creating what is possible" in your own life, try asking…
• If this
is what is “wrong,” what would “right” look like? What is on the other
side of eliminating the problem? What would “good” look like?
• What
would have to be in place for that “good” condition to be reality? What
would people need to know? What would they need to have? What would
they need to feel, be assured of, believe – for that good state to be
real?
• What
would it take for those things to be in place? What actions might you
take to create those conditions?
Moving
beyond our reactive selves is simply a matter of practice, asking
different questions when problems or opportunities arise. And that is something you can try right now.
